The image of God is affirmed throughout the Old Testament. God’s image is first
mentioned in Genesis 1:26-28. However, after the fall of humanity, the image of God is retained
in a distorted way in humanity as seen in Genesis 5 and Genesis 9. God intended Adam and Eve
to be made in the fullness of His image, but due to Adam and Eve’s sin, they raised their children
in their own likeness and according to their own image as well. Colossians 1:15-17 confirms that
Jesus Christ is the clearest expression of the image of God and it is only through becoming more
like Jesus, man can exemplify the image of God to a greater degree. Different theologians have
impacted and developed different views on the image of God.
