In May 1998, the DOJ filed suit against Microsoft accusing the company of violating the
Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. Stated was that Microsoft monopolized its power as one of the
leading personal computer companies. What took place was the fact that they did not allow users
to uninstall Internet Explorer and use other programs such as Netscape and Java as their default
browser preferences. Within this antitrust case was whether Microsoft was allowed to bundle its
program Interment explorer (a web browser software) with its Windows operating system as it
was the system that came with most computers of the day. What was problematic was
Microsoft’s ability to hedge itself in a nearly flawless position in competition with any other
internet browser programs Microsoft was up against. This allegedly was redistricting the market
for competition, where Microsoft was accused of slow download speeds from competitors such
as Netscape Navigator and Opera, which were also internet browser programs.
