BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE, BUSINESS ANALYTICS, AND FRAUD
One of the many business-related uses of BI and business analytics is fraud detection. The
massiveness and unstructured nature of data warehouses and the data stores used in BI and
business analytics, along with the flexibility of BI and business analytic tools, are conducive to
the detection of fraud. Such analysis technologies are especially helpful in finding the data
anomalies and outliers that are so important in tracking down fraud.
Business analytics in particular can be used to detect fraud occurrences in near real time.
Furthermore, advanced business analytics can actually predict future occurrences of fraud. As
Jeff Jonas, a big data analyst with IBM, puts it: “With 87 percent certainty, I can tell you where
you’ll be next Thursday at 5:35 p.m.
” Big data and business analytics are used to detect credit card and healthcare fraud. Let’s look at
detecting healthcare fraud a bit closer.
