Ethics and Morality
Ethics and morality are similar but have some very distinct characteristics. Morality is
defined as “the standards that an individual or a group has about what is right and wrong or good
and evil” (Manuel, Velasquez, 2011, p. 8). Ethics on the other hand is defined as “the discipline
that examines one’s moral standard or the moral standards of a society to evaluate their
reasonableness and their implications for one’s life” (Manuel, Velasquez, 2011, p. 13). Morality
can be somewhat subjective though, in the words of a UK mathematician and philosopher Alfred
Whitehead (1861-1947), morality is what the majority of people like at that particular time and
what they do not like at that particular time is immorality or evil.
