Article Overview
The case of middle management is directed to the controversy of whether technology is
replacing their functions in the industry.
Professor Lynda Gratton published a study referring to the new technology as a
replacement for a middle manager. Gratton focusing on how the future of the work place is
going to be and she considers that middle managers are becoming extinct.
The generation Y, which are all of those who were born between the years of 1970-1999,
are responsible for the end of life of middle manager because they choose to select the way
to work without extensive instruction and careful control of their decisions. This generation
has a predilection for technology; generates interaction between customer and employees
more efficiently through internet communication. They would rather be connected with co-
workers and technology, while being more independent in the work environment.
The author’s research suggests that technology turns out to be less expensive to invest
within companies rather than an environment led by middle managers.
Analysis Implications
The influence of technology on management organization has led to great benefit for the
industry and has generated change. Although the middle management has brought positive
outcomes within the working environment, the introduction of Generation Y has been
responsible for them to be less valuable as before. The communication structure has shifted
