Course Description
English 10C is a college preparatory class at Godwin High School that follows Virginia’s
Standards of Learning for English Language Arts. The class will incorporate reading
comprehension, critical thinking, writing, listening, speaking, and vocabulary through activities
such as discussions, group work, oral presentations, and writing assignments. In order to be
successful, students should be engaged and motivated learners. With an emphasis on World
Literature, this course is designed to strengthen students’ skills in grammar/usage and various
modes of writing in preparation for the End of Course Writing SOL in March of 2014. By
passing the SOL, students may receive final exam exemption. In addition, students will write an
extended literary analysis research paper during the second semester.

Advanced grammar studies

Materials
1. Three ring binder with paper and dividers for literature, writing/grammar, and vocab
2. Pencils, blue or black ink pen, colored pen, and highlighter
3. Composition book
4. Laptop with English 10 folder
5. Textbook and/or individual novels when needed
