Introduction
Ensuring that patient receives their medication accurately and at the time that is due is
crucial to successfully treating illness. Compromising positive patient outcomes due to
interruptions of such services can cause additional nursing hours, and worse an in-
crease in infection or even mortality. Multiple complaints from the nursing staff were re-
ceived voicing valid concerns over numerous delays in medications availability during
early morning medication passes and sporadically throughout the day. Some examples
of issues were that medication arrival time to the units was hours late, while others stat-
ed that they received the wrong medications which could result in catastrophic reper-
cussion for patients and detrimental to our facility. Understanding the severity that de-
lays as this may have on successfully treating patients, the department, in collaboration
with nursing personel, decided that processes and workflows will need to be evaluated
and adjusted.
Determining Accuracy of Information
Addressing concerns such as these could look seem effortless to resolve; however, be-
fore any drastic changes are made, determining the accuracy of the information needs
to be established. Leadership decided to assemble a subcommittee solely dedicated to
reviewing processes within a 24 hour period, which includes the weekends and low
census days, to ensure that we encompass all patient care scenarios. The committee
