RQ Chapter 3
1. A trial judge is the link between the law and the citizens it’s for. Trial judges
are the ones that render decisions that deal directly with people in conflict.
Their duty is to observe and apply the constitutional limitations and
guarantees. They have an obligation to uphold the dignity of the courts and
maintaining respect for the law. One of their main responsibilities is to
determine the applicable rules of law that can be used to reach a decision for
the case being tried. When there is no jury, trial judges are also responsible
for finding the facts.
2. Many states required that the jury’s decision be unanimous because many
people believed that the truth was more likely to be found if the jury acted
only on one common conscience. Several states have removed that
requirement because of many cases being routinely deadlocked by margins of
11-1 or 10-2, with 1 or 2 of the jurors having a different opinion then the rest,
which took a toll on the administration of justice.
3. Lawyers serve three critical roles in society, – as a counselor, an advocate, and
a public servant. These roles dictate that a lawyer meet the highest standards
of professional and ethical conduct. An increasing number of lawsuits filed by
lawyers on behalf of their clients have resulted in much conflict between
