The business world is a place where people’s goal is all about making money and earning
the profit. In other words, it is the world that the great fish eats the small and business people
sometimes have struggles between their benefits and their moral. Thus, as a Christian, one must
maintain his biblical worldview and ethic while practicing business. In the book Business for the
Glory of God, Wayne Grudem identifies methods which not only ease the tension but also take
advantages of both business and glorifying God. This book contains nine major parts of a
business, which includes their opportunities and risks to be experienced when doing business.
Two essential topics out of these nine, which involve any aspect of business as well as affect the
way Christian people glorify God, are money and inequality of possessions.
In each category, Grudem provides a clear introduction, a brief explanation of related
issues, strengths – weaknesses when applying them, and, undoubtedly, efficient approaches to
God’s glory. First nine chapters cover common problems that every merchant is dealing with:
ownership, productivity, employment, commercial transactions, profit, money, inequality of
possessions, competition, and borrowing and lending. In the last two chapters, while “Attitudes
of the heart” is an attempt at summarizing previous chapters; “Effect on World Poverty”
describes the source of poverty and offer methods to generate an idealism in the theoretical
approaches to solving issues of poverty and human rights abuses (Phillips, 2009, p. 406). Besides
making arguments about different aspects of business activity, Grudem states that when one
makes an effort to fulfill his working life with God’s words, he has a chance to get close to
characteristics that belongs to God: “wisdom, knowledge, beauty, creativity, love for others,
kindness, fairness, independence, freedom, exercise of will, blessedness (or joy), and so forth”
(20). The author gives his readers, especially who is in Christendom, a persuasive and honest
book that encourages them to believe that business is not only a non-evil thing to do but also an
important part of world poverty reduction strategy.
