A relationship that has become a lot closer over time would be my mothers and I. I have been married
and been on my own since I was 18. After going through a divorce, completing a 3 and ½ years in The
Army, and my daughter living with my mom, it was time for me to move back home in Fayetteville. It was a
big adjustment for me physically and emotionally to be back home with my mom after all this time.
Although my mother and I had and still have an I– you relationship, it grew into an I-thou relationship.
During the early stages, we talked about my divorce and the things I was going through at the time and
catching up on issues within the family. I was open enough to tell her where was I at, mentally. I expressed
how I felt and what kind of emotional issues I was dealing with. We talked a lot about the death of my dad
that happened almost 6 years ago. My mom and I have a very close relationship and basically talk about
anything. Our relationship has gotten stronger through the year that I have been living here. We talk about
everything and she is now more understanding in where I am coming from. At first, she was not able to
understand or could handle what or how I was expressing myself. We talk more in detail about our future
goals and what do we want to accomplish. We are more in touch with each other’s feelings and emotions. I
can tell with time that we are more connected and are more open to communicate with one another. Our
relationship is genuine, not saying it never was. I can say that my mom is more accepting in who I really
am and how I handle certain situations. I believe in every relationship there is more room to grow.
