Q1. Discuss the impact of current socioeconomic conditions are having on
Recruitment and Selection practices with relevant examples from India and Canada.
A. Socioeconomic (Social and Economic) conditions include factors like global
competition, fast advances in information technology, changing work-force
demographics, a unionized work environment, the economic context, and an
organization’s type and size, and position in the marketplace. Increasing globalisation
has made the world barrier free, due to which many international corporations are
entering the domestic market and threatening the local businesses, like large US-
based discount chains such as Walmart is a serious threats to the survival of smaller
retailer, both in India and Canada, who must struggle to increase e+ciencies and
lower their operating costs, sometimes even leading to Closure like Subiksha. One of
the most important ways to survive is to -nd the best, most productive employees
through the use of best recruitment and selection practices.
Technology has also played a major role in the recruitment and selection practices as
the introduction of many convenient technologies has made the job of the HR less
time consuming and less costly like access to a larger pool of candidates through e-
recruiting, lower recruiting costs, eliminating printing costs and print media
deadlines, and the capability for the immediate tracking of results, only because of
internet and information technology. For example almost all the recruitment by the
Government of Canada is done through internet, and similarly many companies in
India also has started recruitment through internet like Ford India or through HR
companies like Nakuri.com, Monster.com etc.
Canada and India have opposite types of demographics, India on one side has a large
portion of population about 70% still young with an average age of 24, on the other
hand Canada has a large number of workforce in the age group of 18-65 which is
decreasing and workforce above 65 is increasing. Canada and India, both have a
diverse population, Canada having many international Citizens of diverse ethnicity
and India being a much diversi-ed country in-itself, and now also a<racting foreigners
looking for jobs in India. Due to this legal rights play an important role in recruitment
and selection due to diverse pool of applications that a company get for a certain
type of job.
The state of the economy also has a very strong e?ect on recruitment and selection.
Economic booms leads to skilled labour shortages, so recruitment and retention are
given strategic importance. Recessions generally lead to cutbacks in jobs, pay or
ceiling in the job market. Due to this many qualified people are looking for jobs, so
recruitment may be easier for companies that are hiring; but this also leads to more
useless applications to review. The number of people in the applicant pool has an
impact on the quality of people selected for employment. Shortages of skilled labour
or professionals, leads to more emphasis on recruitment, and companies become
less choosy. On the other hand, oversupply of labour leads to less emphasis on
recruitment and companies become choosier while hiring people. For example while
