As a veteran who served nine years touring the world with the united states navy I’m fortunate
to have seen a lot of beauty as well as some of the ugliest evil in the world. There’s nothing
wrong with being proud of where you come from or the country that you live in however it’s
ironic that we seem to have things backwards in this country. It is very common to hear people
state that “America is the best country in the world” but whenever I hear that statement being
said my mind wonders off because I disagree. I used to call Japan home, I lived there for five
years whilst serving in the Navy, within my first two years of living there I was able to visit
eleven different countries that I had never been to before and this is why my mind wonders off
when I hear that statement being said because there is an endless amount of statistics that
prove we are from the greatest, and it’s a naive way to see ourselves because it couldn’t be
further from the truth.
For example, we aren’t very safe in this country and granted I was born and raised in England so
I don’t have a love affair with guns, I do understand how a large portion of responsible
Americans view and use guns as a tool. However, we have a serious issue in this country because
Americans are ten times more likely to be killed by guns than the people in other countries. We
have almost become desensitized by the news of a shootings because the news is saturated with
gun violence so it has become normal. Whereas in Japan I can’t recall of a single time where I
heard someone shot someone else in or around Japan. The nation as a whole is pretty safe, I
