Buddhism
Buddha Shakyamuni (Gautama Siddhartha) is the founder of
Buddhism. He was born in Lumbini, originally a place in northern India but
now is part of Nepal, in 624 BC as a royal prince. The name of his royal
family is “Shakya” and ‘Muni’ means ‘Able One’. His parents named him
Siddhartha and many people had high hopes about his future. In his younger
years, he lived in the royal palace as a prince but at the age of 29 he
journeyed to the forest to live a spiritual life of meditation. After six years he
attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya, India.
