Week 3: Question #3
The main importance for the objection of the immigrants by the Know-Nothing party,
was because during the 1840’s and 1850’s white protestants were getting sick and tired of the
growth of the immigrants that were coming within the country. The Know-Nothing party was a
political party that only allowed white protestants males within the party. I believe this was an
effective way for the Know-Nothing Party to take control of the political spectrum, since there
were over a million whites males who were apart of this. According from our text “all offices
should be placed by people, whether by election or by appointment, none but native-born
protestant citizens” (Daniels, pg.10). The meaning for this was to make sure that only whites
were going to be in office, and this takes any chance away from the immigrants of having a shot
at being in office. I believed the reason why Daniels said that this has ceased was because of the
