According to Tweed, K. (2014), the lab tests done by Alcatel- Lucent have proved that
copper wires can run ultra-fast broadband services. A prototype developed by Bell labs has
capabilities of delivering uploads and downloads at unbelievable speeds of up to 10
gigabits per second simultaneously. Goldman, D. (2014) describes the speed as beating the
previous speed records by eight times. He continues to say that the technology beats the
earlier broadband speeds by a thousand times making it ten times faster than Google fiber
(GOOGL and Tech30) which is believed to be the fastest broadband speed available in the
market.
The new technology is called XG-FAST. It is an improvement on the existing G.fast
Technology. Tweed, K. (2014).The new technology uses a frequency range of up to 500
MegaHertz for it to achieve the high speeds although limited to short distances. In a
distance of about 70 Metres, the technology achieved a speed of 1Gigabit per second over
a single copper wire. The 10Gbps speed was achieved using a pair of copper wires over a
distance of about 30 metres through a unique technology called bonding. Goldman, D.
(2014) believes that the technology will give broadband companies an opportunity to
provide high speeds like ones achieved in fiber optics networks. The exciting bit about the
