did?
In 1870’s to be a citizen of New York was a disgrace. Boss William tweed is considered the most corrupt
urban politician of American history. Boss tweed’s name now is associated with purely bad things, but
he also did a lot of good things during his political career. Boss tweed was the leader of Tammany
organization. Tammany organization was one of those local shady organizations that also did a lot of
good things to the people they were supposed to be representing. It was a sprawling city of immigrants
and they reached out to Irish and German new comers and offered them comfort. This helped Tammany
hall reap the gratitude during elections. Tammany provided people help to those who needed it, for
example if you cannot send the child to school or you cannot pay the rent, or you just lost your husband
or if you are about to have been evicted etc. Boss tweed was a superb politician who took care of his
mainly immigrant constituency, providing jobs for the unemployed, orphanages, hospitals and shelters
for the poor. He is considered one of the first politicians who swore to power on mass politics. Even
though he is a very corrupt politician, the reason why he stayed in power for as long as he did was
because of the way he took care of the people in his constituency. The total amount he stole during his
tenure was close to 50 million USD during that time. Newspaper editors then started digging deep as to
where the lavish lifestyle of tweed came from and then his corrupt ways got exposed, he was later
arrested for his crimes.
