Write an academic essay for other first-year students in your major. In the essay, identify some of the significant

contemporary issues or conflicts within your chosen career field. The issues may be local, state, national, or

international (or a combination) in their scope.

To support your points, you must conduct and include quotes from at least one interview with a faculty member

or working professional in your field.

First Draft: Bring TWO copies of a complete essay. The paper may be LEGIBLY written or typed, but it MUST

be ready once class begins. If you miss peer review day or if you do not have a complete draft, your paper will

receive a grade deduction.

Final Draft: Submit a hard copy AND an electronic copy of the revised paper via TurnItIn: 4-7 pages, double-

spaced, and TYPED. Both rough & final drafts must be submitted, along with peer reviews and any in–

class/preliminary writings or materials related to the paper; the final draft should reflect revision suggestions from

the students in our class who peer-reviewed your paper.

Type the paper DOUBLE SPACED according to MLA style (see HB Ch. 13)—including

your name, my name (Dr. Claywell), course number and section, and date—in upper left. Points will be

deducted if the paper does not follow MLA. Remember, EVERYTHING is DOUBLE SPACED in MLA!

Submit stapled papers and supporting materials IN A CLEAN MANILA FOLDER

with your name on the tab. Points will be deducted if the paper is not in a folder or if it is late or

incomplete.

Save a copy of the paper electronically and on paper.

This paper is worth 10% of your total course grade. I will evaluate it based on whether or not it completes the

assignment, how effectively it achieves its purpose and reaches its stated audience, the complexity of its content, the

logic of its organization, and the appropriateness of its language and mechanics, in descending order.

Write a 5-8 page paper that addresses ONE of the following:

Select an article about your career field (from a peer reviewed journal in your field) or from any SCHOLARLY

ESSAY in TRP to analyze for an educated, adult audience. This assignment will involve going into detail about the

effectiveness of the writing given its purpose, audience, and format. Analyze the author’s writing style and how

closely it fits with your understanding of what readers would expect based on the publication it was originally in, the

content and subject matter, etc. Follow MLA format for paper formatting and for citation of sources. IF THE

ARTICLE IS AN OUTSIDE ARTICLE, INCLUDE A COPY OF IT. IF IT IS FROM TRP, CLEARLY INDICATE

WHICH ARTICLE YOU ARE ANALYZING.

YOUR PAPER SHOULD ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS:

1. Which piece of writing have you chosen to analyze? Early in this section, give the author’s name, the title

of the text, year of publication, and the general subject. What does the text have to offer about the subject?

Provide a complete MLA (or other approved format) work cited entry for the text at the end of the paper.

2. What is the message the author is trying to get across to the reader? Where is the message found in the

writing (give page references and quotations)? Some pieces of writing will have more than one major

message; if so, what are they, and is the author trying to accomplish too much?

3. Who is the intended audience? How do you know? Again, give page references and quotations of text if

they demonstrate the point you are making. Is the writer a member of the community she or he addresses?
