Bombay Talkies: Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh
Description
Bombay Talkies is a 2013 film that consists of four short story films that pays homage to
the 100 years of Indian Cinema. The short film Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh was the one that spoke
out the most to me as it touched on a subject that is usually never seen or tends to be made fun of
in Bollywood films, that subject is homosexuality. The short film starts with an altercation
between Avinash and his father, in this scene you find out that Avinash is gay. He meets Gayatri,
his boss, as he starts his internship at a popular magazine. Very quickly they create a bond which
ends up with Gayatri inviting Avinash to her home where she and her husband, Dev, prepare him
a dinner, since it was his birthday. During the dinner, Dev is very cold until he finds out that
Avinash and he share a common passion. Both Avinash and Dev love old songs and when
Gayatri finds out, she tells Dev to take Avinash and show him his impressive music collection. It
was in that room where we see the beginning of Avinash’s chase. There are many signals
Avinash gives Dev that expresses his interest; he shows up at Dev’s home and gives him a CD.
He also takes Dev to see a little girl who sings old Hindi songs and he shows up at Dev’s
