1. Why did Boeing adopt the radical change approach for designing and developing
the 787 Dreamliner? What were the risks? In your opinion, was it a good move?
Defend your choice.
At that time, excessive competition with Airbus and desire for innovation made Boeing choose the radical change
approach. The company wanted to achieve aggressive improvement goal and apply its technique drastically. It wanted
to reduce cost of manufacturing and development time.
It did not manage well processes of supply chains. There was not time enough to establish the project and
communicate with each other among various vendors. It also brought unnecessary complexity into the project. Boeing
did not have all the technologies which caused unexpected problems and delay.
I think the decision was not good. That is because as a result, the Boeing was faced to give loss incurred by delay to
airlines which purchased Boeing 787s. Furthermore, it caused aggravation of financial condition of the company.
1. Using the Silo Perspective versus Business Process Perspective, analyze the
Dreamliner program.
In silo perspective, the dreamliner program had a problem with communication between Boeing and first or second vendors.
although silo effect made efficiency of individual departments increase, it caused incompatible processes of supply chains.
Boeing planed to use various suppliers having expertise of each parts of plane for a quick process. However, rather it caused
continuous delay over due date.
In business process perspective, Boeing needed to monitor and oversee its connection of a huge number of vendors by using
