Search engines and social media now have the ability to edit out other opinions
and points of view so you don’t have to look at “unnecessary information.” Although, if
all people look at are shared opinions we will all become less educated on other points of
view, have less of an open mind with other people, and become selfish and overly
opinionated.
After watching the Ted Talk I now know to click on informational “veggies” as
well as informational “dessert” so that I can have a healthy timeline instead of a junk
food timeline. He goes on to explain our own opinions, gossip, political views, all form
the “dessert”, but we also need to click on the “veggies” to keep an open mind and learn
something new and grow instead of thinking we are right about everything. The veggies
are things like other opinions, world news, current events, etc.
This ties together with the “Generation Like” video because everything that we
“like” is noticed by social media engines, which is how they invisibly edit what we can
see. People don’t realize that the things they like on social media can effect what they see
