Amazon, the conglomerate with business activities that span electronic commerce to operating
the supermarket chain Whole Foods, owns large warehouse and processing centers to hold its
expansive inventory. Earlier this year they filed a patent for technology in the design of a
wristband which will be used to relay information about warehouse employee’s physical location
at all times. The technology goes so far as to track their hand movements and vibrate in order to
nudge the worker’s hands in the optimal direction to handle products. The wristbands would
function alongside tracking technology already being used by the company to monitor workers.
When an order is placed to Amazon, the information is transmitted to small computers carried
on each worker’s person. As quickly as possible, the worker must find the product, retrieve it,
and bring it to a delivery box before repeating the process almost immediately. The goal of
combining these technologies already in use with the newly patented wristbands is to increase
worker productivity and comply with the company’s delivery targets. These targets, described in
the article as “ambitious,” are already being produced by computer systems via an Amazon
logistics app. </p>
