COMM 1100: BLOG POST ASSIGNMENT (20%)
Use your research and follow the guidelines below to create an online article for those in your field. You will post
a draft in the Learning Hub Assignments (Draft Blog folder) before your Week 7 lab (Oct. 16-22). Then, you will
post your final version in both the Learning Hub Discussion and Assignments areas before your Week 8 lab (Oct.
2329) AND bring a paper copy to lab. Use the checklist on the reverse to evaluate and revise your blog
entry (it will be used to mark your assignment).
Title
Create a descriptive and engaging title. A title should be a short phrase (e.g. 5-10 words),
rather than a complete sentence (but it can be a question). Capitalize the first letter of words in
your title (except “the,” “and,” etc.) and make it stand out (e.g. large/bold). Include your name
below it (e.g. “by xxx”).
Document
Design
Criteria
Use descriptive and interesting headings (also called headlines) to help readers skim the blog
and find topics. Blogs can also include listing (follow the guidelines covered in lectures/labs on
when and how to use bulleted lists). Finally, use white space (between short 3-6 line
paragraphs, around elements like headings and listing), and emphasis (e.g.
bold/italics/capitalization, etc.). See Chapter 5 and lecture/lab materials on these document
design elements. Use a 1012-point font, minimum 2 cm margins, and single or 1.15 spacing
within paragraphs. Do not indent the first lines of paragraphs or justify text. While visual
examples can be effective in blogs, please instead provide hyperlinks to examples. This will help
keep your blog short. Example: CPA Canada’s Tax Blog is a monthly blog with advice and news for
accounting professionals. As shown in the blog….
Business
Writing
Use the business writing techniques (e.g. tone, wording, sentences, paragraphs) covered in
Weeks 1-4 of the course, Chapters 4-5. Remember that effective blogs have a personal “voice.”
