In June 2016, a narrow majority (52%) of voters approved a referendum to remove the
United Kingdom from the European Union. The campaign (and subsequent fall-out from
the result) raised many issues about the benefit (or lack thereof) of the EU for the UK. Of
particular concern was the surrender of sovereignty to a common organization that may
not have the best interest of UK's citizens in mind. What national and local concerns of
members citizens are sacrificed as a result of the EU? Do the benefits outweigh the
disadvantages to individual members? In other words, are such national sacrifices worth
the price of greater European prosperity and global influence?
