How much did you know about the BP spill before reading this article?
I knew that a ship had spilled a bunch of oil in the ocean and that is about it.
1.) Define ethics in your own words.
I believe ethics is similar to morals in that if it feels wrong in any way it probably is.
2.) Where did you learn ethics?
I learned ethics from my parents and also from experience like working with other
people and meeting new people to see different morals.
3.) Do you suspect that the decisions made with regard to the construction of the well
were: Explain your answer in DETAIL!
The decision made by the company during the construction of the oil well were highly
unethical and illegal. The company completely ignored the safety measures just for
making profits. Irregularities in well protocols and its behavior prove that the company
was also involved in illegal activities. In the article it states, “It’s not easy to blow up an
offshore oil rig”. “It requires an astonishing collection of failures big and small, human
and mechanical, by individuals and by organizations”.
4.) How would you characterize BP’s approach to corporate social responsibility?
BP has continually claimed to be “…progressive, responsible, innovative and
performance driven”. These are the company’s core values, and broken down further,
the company promises that its goals include responsibility to the communities it does
business with and the world at large, as well as responsibly handling any incidents that
do occur. they “aim for no accidents, no harm to people and no damage to the
environment”. I thought BP’s approach was good because they staged disaster
scenarios that would last two to three days so another oil spill wouldn’t happen again.
5.) What actions would you recommend that BP take in the future?
