Response to Birdcage
The Birdcage was readapted from Jean Poiret’s 1973 French farce La Cage Aux Folles, a
play that became a Tony-winning musical with same name. Each adaptation has a similar plot;
however, Mike Nichols’ film relocates the action from France to Florida. The Birdcage, is a film
that explores societies views of the LGBTQ community through the genre of comedy, by
generating the stereotypical homosexual male couple, Mike Nichols creates a consciousness in
his audience of the biases that they too may hold.
The moment that captivates me is the dinner scene. The dinner is the climax of the movie
