Biology Service Project
For my service project, I chose to do “4 & 20 bakers.” This project was about growing food without the
use of pesticides and how to make compost. When using pesticides, those chemicals that are used on
the plants are then taken in by the person that consumes is. It is not only very bad for the environment,
but it is bad for your body. We learned the different ways to get around using pesticides. One of these
ways is to build bug hotels. Bug hotels are structures built and placed around the area in which you are
growing your crops. These hotels attract specific types of bugs. One of the most common types of bug
hotels is for parasitic wasps. Parasitic wasps are wasps that are known as body invaders. These wasps lay
their eggs in a host, most commonly a caterpillar. The larvae feed inside the host until ready to pupate.
These larvae eat the host until there is nothing left but a skin. One example is the hornworm wasp. The
hornworm wasp is an enemy of the hornworm. The hornworm is commonly found eating tomato plants.
Most people would use pesticides to kill this worm and prevent them from coming back. However, with
