In my opinion the four most important points that Philip R. Howard is addressing to in his lecture
titled; “Four ways to fix a broken legal system” are as follows:
1. Judge law mainly by its effects on society, not individual situations disputes
2. Trust in law is an essential condition of freedom. Distrust skew behavior towards failure.
3. Law must set boundaries protecting an open field of freedom, not intercede in all
disputes.
4. To rebuild boundaries of freedom, two changes are essential:
a. Re-humanize the law, restore authority to judges and officials to apply the law
b. Law has to be simple
I completely agree with everything that was stated in the video and all the points that were
highlighted. We are becoming a nation of distrust and mixed motives. We need to rebuild
boundaries, value of judgement and have our words have meaning. There is in no respect within
one another, private property, businesses or a value of life. We must restore authority to help us
make everyday choices and at the same time restore our freedom to be free and not in fear.
My thoughts on this video were to continue and search for additional videos from Philip R.
Howard as I enjoyed his lecture and way of thinking. He was honest and knew what he was
talking about. Especially on how we need to restore authority on chain of commands and how he
ends his speech by saying “Get freedom back and release energy and passion to meet the needs
of our time” which I felt was very well said. Too many people feel entitled and privileged with
no accountability for their actions. Assuming their action are acceptable as no one will tell them
any different and they have no one to answer to.
