Final Exam Essay – Bio 142
This semester, we examined various mechanisms by which the body is able to maintain a stable internal
environment despite the fact that conditions are constantly changing. This phenomenon is called homeostasis. To
achieve homeostasis, the body’s organ systems must work together with control exerted by the autonomic nervous
system and endocrine system. For this paper, you should discuss the importance of homeostasis and how the various
systems of the body interact to achieve homeostasis. The paper should be written in APA style. Use the “owl purdue”
link provided in blackboard to guide you in the rules of this particular writing style.
Be sure to include the following:
1. Cover page – APA style
2. Abstract – an abstract is a brief summary of the key elements discussed in the paper. Abstracts are used by
researchers to determine if a paper contains pertinent information – determines if the entire paper should be read.
3. Introduction – The introduction should be more than just a few sentences! You can discuss what homeostasis is;
why it’s important; the mechanisms by which the body achieves homeostasis in general (no specifics here) such as
negative feedback loops etc… Basically introduce the topic before getting into the detailed specifics of the paper.
4. Body of the paper – Discuss specific parameters maintained by homeostasis – The body of the paper will discuss the
importance of regulating each of the required parameters and the mechanisms used to maintain each (see list of
required parameters below). This can be broken up into separate sections with headings (APA style).
For each parameter you should:
a. Explain why it is important to remain within the healthy range for the parameter being discussed. What is
the healthy range? What are the negative effects on health if conditions go above… below… the healthy
