Below is a brief description of the structures of the female reproductive system that you are responsible for
knowing and being able to identify.
External Structures:
1. Mons Pubis – A latin term meaning “pubic mound”. The fatty tissue lying anterior to the pubic symphysis
in females. In the adult female, it is covered with pubic hair.
2. Clitoris – organ involved in sexual arousal in females.
3. Prepuce of Clitoris – Also known as the “clitoral hood”. A fold of skin that surrounds and protects the
clitoris. Formed by extensions of the labia minora.
4. Glans of the Clitoris – The external protrusion of the clitoris that contains many sensory nerve endings.
5. Urethral orifice – The opening of the urethra that is located between the glans of the clitoris and the vaginal
opening. Functions as the site where urine is discharged.
6. Labia majora – Thick protruding folds of skin that are covered with pubic hair on the external surface.
7. Labia minora – Smaller folds of skin located inside of the labia majora
8. Vestibule – The space surrounded by the labia minora. This space contains the urethral opening and the
vaginal orifice.
9. Vaginal orifice – The opening to the vagina.
Internal Structures:
1. Ovary – The primary female sex gland. It is the primary sex gland because it is the organ which actually
produces the gamete. There are normally 2 ovaries, about 5 cm each, suspended on either side of the uterus.
Also known as the female gonad. (More later on the function)
