Hello classmates,
For this week's forum post, I have chosen a bill that was introduced on January 5, 2017
by Senator Bill Cassidy. The bill is titled S.57, which requires the Secretary of Veterans
Affairs revoke bonuses paid to employees involved in electronic wait list manipulations, and for
other purposes. I chose this bill because it is interesting to see how the House of Representative
and the Senate deals with bills such as this one. It was informative to read about this bill in
detail, especially after I found out what it takes to pass a bill into law. There are many challenges
before a bill reaches the United States President.
This is a snap shot of a bills journey to be sign into law. A “Bill” can begin in either the
House of Representatives or Senate ("Legislative Process · House.gov"). Once the bill is read by
the clerk, it is then sent to the one of the House’s standing committees. After a bill is approved
by the committee, it is then ready for debate. If majority of the House of Representatives vote
“yes” it is sent to the Senate where it goes through many like steps as in House of
Representatives ("Legislative Process · House.gov"). If majority of the Senate vote “yes” it is
then introduced to the President for his approval or refusal of the bill into law. Once the
President approves the bill it is signed into law and enforced by the government on all levels.
