Big 5 – The Lottery by Shirley Jackson
The conflict that is portrayed in this short story is individual vs. community.
We can see how Tessie alone is trying to protect herself against a group of people,
which is the citizen of the village. She is trying to convince the citizen how her
husband didn’t get enough time to choose and how they should start over. Tessie
believes that the game is cheating and she asks the villagers to restart, while the
citizen did nothing. The villagers threw Tessie alone stones. It is also a conflict
between an unfair law and tradition with the individual. Everyone in the village is
nervous to draw from the box.
The setting of this story is in a small village and it can be seen by the amount
of villagers living there. There are only about 300 people living there. There is no
specific community that the author wrote, and it makes us see that she is criticizing
