Siddhartha written by Hermann Hesse is the book that’s influence I can still feel. I was a
freshman when I met with the book and started to read it with a translation to Turkish and
in the original language, German, at the same time. I was mainly interested about the
probable difference in the translation at the beginning but afterwards it became the book
that I was looking for a long time. At that time I was in a search, I was not sure what my
values were and what I was believing, what my purpose in life should be.
The book is about a man, named Siddhartha who decides to discover himself. This pursue is
actually the most influential part of the book; he seems like a person who has everything, a
family a normal life and a regular income. But he feels inner discomfort and thinks he has to
find the missing part of his life. So, he begins to jumps in all different situations that we can
see in life. He fasts for God and tries to find comfort in religion, he becomes rich and tries to
find comfort in money but at the end he just find out that the comfort he was looking for
was just to be satisfactory with what you have, to be pleasant what life brings you, to leave
greed.
After reading this book I erased the concerns in my life and tried just to take whatever
comes with a smile. I had similar periods in my life so I felt I was Siddhartha.
Reading is a constant in our lives, even though we cannot find time to read a book in our
lives we are in a rush of social media where we observe, stalk, post, read and write our
stories and the one’s of others. I love to read psychological and philosophical books, they
make me think about myself and the life. Policy, adventure or crime books are really not in
my interest.
