TOPIC: Dangers of AI
ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERN: Topical
SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To inform the audience about the dangers of AI in the world around
us.
THESIS STATEMENT (A single declarative statement that captures the essence/theme of the
speech): AI lacks transparency in its decision making, leading it to be untrustworthy, and it
also makes it unreliable due to misinformation and lack of trust.
Introduction
ATTENTION GETTER: Imagine relying on a tool for decision making, but the tool struggles
to differentiate between what is right, and what is wrong. Picture a world where the reason
behind crucial choices remains a mystery, leaving us questioning our trust in technology.
Now, envision a future where the slightest disturbance can shatter the reliability of our most
advanced artificial intelligence systems. In the realm of AI, these are not just hypothetical
scenarios; they’re realities that shape our world. Let’s dive into the complexities of AI’s
reliability and decision-making transparency.
PURPOSE (state specific purpose, relate topic to audience and establish credibility):
In today’s day and age there have been incredible technological advancements, AI being one
of them. There are so many uses for AI with almost everything we do. For instance, we can
have AI drive our cars, write essays, create art, invest, find trends, translate in real-time, and
maybe the biggest one of all, it can learn. All these sound like positives, but in reality, we
don’t know how or why it does these things. AI surrounds us in the world today, even when
we don’t realize that it is there. AI is an unknown realm that we don’t know much about, and
because of this, AI contains risk when you use it. I hope you will listen to my speech and
learn about the risks and dangers of using AI.
STATE THESIS & MAIN POINTS:
Body
(USE 2 OR 3 POINTS; PLEASE USE COMPLETE SENTENCES THROUGHOUT))
I. MAIN POINT (state as a single declarative sentence): First of all, I will be talking about
the Reliability and Bias in AI information.
A. SUBPOINT: This comes from AI’s Inability to Distinguish Bias data which can
cause AI to output false and biased information.
1. This limitation of AI in identifying Biased Material is a big issue
because it doesn’t give truthful information to the user.
a. A quote from Andrew D. Beman-Cavallaro of LibGuides states,
“Unlike humans, AI tools cannot reliably distinguish between
biased material and unbiased material when using information
to construct their responses.”
b. This simply means that AI lacks contextual understanding based
on their training data which is a problem.
2. This training data leads to Implications of Bias in AI Outputs.
a. Which then also leads to AI Reinforcing societal prejudices.
b. All of this misinformation and biased information is not good
for AI responses which means that there should be a lack of
trust in AI systems.
B. SUBPOINT: An example of AI’s biased information is Amazon’s Gender-Biased
Recruitment Tool.
1. This recruitment tool was supposed to help Amazon recruit workers,
but it had a major flaw in its training data.
a. Harvard Business Review stated this about the amazon
situation, “Amazon built an AI-based tool to “out recruit” other
tech firms in the tech brains arms race. The company trained
their models to look for top talent in the resumes. However, the
AI models were trained using tainted data collected over a
10-year period in which the vast majority of candidates were
men. The AI model gave higher priority to male resumes, and
low scoring for the resumes that participated in women’s
activities, even if the names were anonymized, such as
“Women’s chess club captain.” After many attempts to make the
program gender-neutral, Amazon gave up and disbanded the
tool and the team.”
b. This misinformation leads to AI outputting unfair results that
hurt many people.
2. AI does Attempt to Rectify Bias
a. Although, it really struggles in achieving gender neutrality
b. This is why amazon Ultimately discontinued the tool, due to
bias persistence.
Connective Sentence (transitioning from Main Point I to Main Point II): AI may be
biased but if that biased information was taken away, why would we get good results?
The answer is we do not know.
II. MAIN POINT (state as a single declarative sentence): The Reasons that AI makes the
decisions it does is unknown to us.
A. SUBPOINT: AI has a Lack of Transparency in Decision-Making
