Benefits of Comprehensive Sex Education in Public Schools

There are two types of sex education in the United States that have been taught in public
schools. First is abstinence-only sex education. Abstinence-only sex education represents a form of
sex education that teaches about not having sex outside of marriage. It often excludes other types of
sexual and reproductive health education, like birth control and safe sex. The second type is
comprehensive sex education, which educates students about the pregnancy and disease prevention
benefits of contraception. Sex education is set up to help many people gain information, skills, and
motivation about sex. In addition, it does not exclude them from learning and demonstrating safe sex.
That is why comprehensive sex education should be taught in high schools throughout the United
States. Comprehensive sex education is high quality teaching and learning about a broad variety of
topics while exploring values and beliefs about those topics. Teenagers gain the skills needed in
comprehensive sex education to help navigate relationships and to help manage their own
