A communication audit is an indicator, at a given time, of an organization’s current
communication practices and how effective they are. An audit can cover internal and external
communication or both, depending on the objectives and outcomes desired.
More specifically, an audit can pinpoint problem areas such as frequent misunderstandings,
information blocks, information gaps, information duplication, or misrepresentation
Objectives:
• Determine the effectiveness of current communication processes.
Processes and channels, strengths and weaknesses, key audiences
• Determine the relevance and usefulness of various communication topics and channels
• Determine communication needed by key audiences, internal and external
• Assess whether audiences are receiving key messages, internal and external
• Determine the ongoing process for measuring the effectiveness of communication.
