The Formation of a Nation
Our country has evolved to characterize gays, lesbians, immigrants, and the act of
abortion as uncivil. Connecting with Franklin, he states the following, “as much curiosity as you,
and when you come into our towns, we wish for opportunities of looking at you, but for this
purpose we hide ourselves behind bushes, where you are to pass, and never intrude ourselves
into company” (Franklin 221). During the seventeenth century their manners practiced are still
repeated today but differently. Referring to Indians as savages, claiming they are uncivil, and
considering them as inhumane is what is happening today with gays, lesbians, immigrants, and
the act of abortion.
In previous presidential debates, candidates discuss the government enforcing decisions
on abortion, immigration, and on more tax regulations on either the middle class or wealthy.
Most plans mentioned by the candidates in these previous debates are absurd and extremely
biased. For instance, in Occom’s situation he states, “ Now you see what difference they made
between me and other missionaries; they gave me 180 pounds for 12 year’s Service, which they
gave for one year’s services in another mission.” He later responds , “… but I must say, I believe
it is because I am a poor Indian. I can’t help that God has made me so; I did not make myself
so.” This biased action was because he was an Indian savage, sad to say that our country is still
at fault with this type of discrimination today. Tragic to say these division within communities
have come to be a great downfall within the formation of this country. It is confirmed that we
live in a nation with diverse cultures, beliefs, customs, religions, race, consequently, there is
separation. This country has been established surrounded with discrimination, separation, and
great conflict numerous centuries ago and it is currently occurring. Separation is an immense
weak-tie in this country, mostly involving upper and lower class, religion, race, citizenship, and
self perception on others. This creates a great set back in the unison of a country we should
accomplish.
Benjamin Franklin states, “ Savages we call them, because their manners differ from
ours, which we think the perfection of civility; they think the same of theirs”,( Franklin 218).
Indians practiced many different customs and had a unique way to unite as a community. and
surrounded many of their beliefs with trust in God but because the Indians differed from the
Pilgrims they were defined as “savages and “uncivil” (Franklin 221). It was unfair treatment
