"Bartelby, The Scrivener: A Story of Wallstreet" is a fiction story published in 1853 by
Herman Melville. The story can have various number of interpretations as different people have
been interpreting it differently since it was published. In text the story is about a man with odd
personality features that gets a job as a scrivener, until one day he just decides to stop working
for no apparent reason. At first there is not much known about the man, but later content of his
previous life is revealed and justifies for his odd behavior. The significance becomes clear when
his last occupation is reveled. The loneliness and negativity surrounded in the dead letters office
had a negative affect on his psyche as it would to many people that work in such conditions.
The story commences with the narrator introducing himself as a lawyer and then going
