Upon learning the core themes of the chapter, I choose James Cameron’s movie Avatar to
analyze and apply those themes too. I believe that the movie has prevalent and potent examples
of the Social Comparison theory, Social Exchange theory, managing cultural differences in
relationships, stages of romantic development, and self-disclosure.
From the opening scene of the movie the protagonist, Jake Sully, is lamenting on how he
is not his brother. His brother, Tom Sully was a twin brother, who died in transit to the planet of
Pandora, and ever since discovering this he has been compared to him because Tom had a Ph.D.
