a. During that period, the level of corruption increased then gradually decreased and
increased and finally decreased. This score is used to measure the level of crime
of a particular region.
2. There is a definite correlation between corruption and economic development. Whenever
a society becomes corrupt, people start distrusting its leadership. An extreme case of this
is in the Middle East like Iraq and Afghanistan. Because their politicians were corrupt,
the countries lost the trust of other countries. That, in part caused their economies to
decline. Another thing that corruption can cause is a rigged system. If a politician is being
funded by a lobbyist, that politician is likely to rule in the favor of the lobbyist.
Additionally, corruption can weaken the defense of a country. In the case of Australia, it
is currently going through a period of military corruption. According to a source on The
Diplomat the loss of commercial nonmilitary data by a defense contractor and the loss of
security plans to the parliament house. In intelligence operations, all the pieces matter,
and even the loss of unclassified information adds to the pool of potentially valuable
information that could be exploited by a future enemy” (Douglas). Intelligence is a key
aspect in a country’s defense and this illustrates the lack of integrity of certain politician.
