Astronomy, Research, and the Search of Extraterrestrial Life
“E.T. phone home.” Many recognize the famous line spoken by the extraterrestrial in
Steven Spielberg’s movie, “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.” The fascination of searching for aliens
continues, as astronomers believe there is life on another planet. With the creation of the
universe, time began and the Earth formed. Earth’s qualities and environment set the stage for
life. As time passed, simple cells evolved into mammals. Combining the vast universe and
improved technology, scientists use the opportunity to learn about, and search for, extraterrestrial
life. Over millions of years, planet Earth allowed life to evolve and survive, and scientists
eagerly explore the possibility that extraterrestrial life exists elsewhere in the universe.
Properties of Life on Earth
When most individuals question what the Earth needs to support life, the needs usually
sound like this abundant oxygen in the atmosphere that is otherwise not poisonous, temperatures
in a narrow range of conditions, and an abundant and varied food sources. This is true for only
