Lab 2A:
1. What is cosmology? The science of the origin and development of the universe. Modern
astronomy is dominated by the Big Bang theory, which brings together observational astronomy
and particle physics. Why does Weinberg begin his discussion of scientific cosmology by
retelling a Norse creation myth? I believe he did so to show the contrast between what humans
once believe how the universe came about and to our current understanding.
2. What is the standard model of the origin of the universe? More or less the big bang
theory, the universe as we know it started from an explosion. How was the explosion that
began the universe different from the explosions we are familiar with on earth? The explosion
did not start from a definite center and spreading out. The explosion simultaneously
everywhere, filling all space from the beginning, with every particle of matter rushing apart
from ever other particle.
3. What are elementary particles? various fundamental subatomic particles. Why is the
study of these particles essential to providing evidence for cosmological theories? These are
essential to study because they are used to understand the smallest parts of the universe.
4. What conditions of the universe at one-hundredth of a second determined that only
