Abstract
On Saturday, January 1st, 1983 the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET)
became the first worldwide operational network and the precursor to what we now know today
as the Internet. While this date may not be the most known milestone in the development of the
Internet, it is one, if not the most significant, since it was the genesis of the infrastructure that has
allowed the interweaving of our business, entertainment, educational, and personal lives. Over
the last 31 years, the Internet has impacted most industries in ways we could not have imagined.
