1. Discuss two (2) ways in which a child experienced life at the Manzanar internment
camp.
Two ways that children experienced life at the internment were that of eating habits being
changed within the mess halls at Manzanar and the clothing conditions within Manzanar.
Most of these families were used to eating as a family back home but due to intense
conditions and inconveniences most of the families ended up splitting up to eat with others
during the meal times. This ultimately led to many of the families not being able to go back
to their old ways of eating as a family again, even after they made it back home. With the
cold weather conditions and the lack of clothes many of the internment members were
forced to become seamstresses and fashion clothes out of the old army clothes. Most of the
clothes were much too big especially for the children and they had to wear them anyways
making sure to stay bundled up.
2. What was the biggest adjustment that the author’s mother had to make during the
changed them. The author’s family only started eating a family unit again after the passing
of their father. The author said they did this to try to fill the void he had left in the family.
