Assignment-2.1: Double Jeopardy
The main character, Libby Parsons, and her husband Nick, a wealthy businessman, live
the ideal life style. They have a bright four–year-old son. They were living the American dream.
Nick then surprises Libby (who was always passionate about sailing) with her dream sail boat.
But on the weekend boat trip with Nick, Libby wakes up mysteriously covered in blood. Filled
with terror and panic, she looks for her husband all over the boat, but only $nds a knife. She
mistakenly picks it up right as the coast guard arrives, making her the prime suspect.
Regardless of no body being found, and Libby con‘nuing her claim of innocence, she is
convicted of murdering her husband and sent to prison. Some’me later, she is talking to her son
on the telephone and becomes aware that her husband is s‘ll alive and living with the woman
she entrusted her son to for the dura‘on of her prison sentence. Libby then realizes she has
been framed, destroying her mental state even more.
While she is serving her sentence, Libby comes in contact with a former lawyer who
informs her that she could now carry out the same crime that she was convicted of (Nick’s
murder) with impunity because she had already been convicted of his murder (because the
Double Jeopardy Clause would prevent her from being charged again). A.er only six years into
her sentence, Libby is paroled. She then starts her quest to $nd her husband and seek
