Though they have taught us the five-paragraph format, the English lessons learnt
in 12th grade are not enough to help us transition into post secondary English
courses. The highschool English curriculum ought to incorporate more focus on vital
aspects such as prevision, revision, and simplicity. Students are often blind sided by
the new concepts in post secondary, many of which we should be familiar with. Now
into my first month of college, I have a much clearer understanding of how
important prevision, revision, and simplicity is.
Students are often struggling with staying organized due to secondary school not
shining any light on the bigger picture. ‘Prevision’ explained by Donald Murray in
“Internal Revision”, is one of my go to tactics in order to writing an interesting and
simple paper. Prevision allows us students to develop a point of few, in which our
argument will be more effective. Murray states, “Prevision includes, in my opinion,
the underestimated skills of title and lead writing, which help the student identify a
subject, limit it, develop a point of view towards it, and begin to find the voice to
explore the subject.” During my highschool days I had the ability to keep my
thoughts fairly organized and coherent. My practice of being organized came from
brainstorming and getting all my ideas down onto a piece of paper before I dove in
