The Free-Soil Party was a political movement beginning in 1848 during the beginnings of our
country. This party was developed by a group of individuals who felt slavery was cruel and
unfair to those being neglected. This group was mainly supporters of the north whom were so
influential they eventually were able to gain the backing from congress, senate and even the
president Abraham Lincoln. This free-soil party had two main goals in mind, abolish slavery and
expand western into the new land gained in the victory of the Mexican-American war. As
support grew in the north, the divide with the south became greater which resulted In tensions
rising to an all-time high. Many believe that this party and the ideas behind it had a major
impact on the relationship between the north and the south, and ultimately brought us that
much closer to the civil war in 1861
