Introduction
There are several ways to benchmark the performance of any company. One way is to assess the
quantitative aspects of the company such as revenue generated, profits earned, etc. Another way
is to understand the qualitative functioning of the company, like culture, organizational strategy,
brand value, and others. These factors help gauge how the company functions, internally as well
as in front of the stakeholders. In this project, we have tried to analyze the effectiveness of
organizational performance, using both primary and secondary research. We have also tried to
incorporate the key learnings from the research conducted by us, to understand the organizational
fit in the industry. The companies we have selected are KPMG and Mahindra. Both the
companies are well established and are front runners in their respective industries.
About the Organizations
KPMG
With an Anglo Dutch origin and being a multinational professional services network, KPMG
holds a position in big four accounting organizations. The company has headquarters located in
Amstelveen, the Netherlands and operates a vast network in almost 147 countries with over
219,000 employees. Peat Marwick International and Lynell Main Goerdeler combined in 1987,
along with their respective member companies, to create the KPMG organization. Company’s
history in India is 27 years old, when it started carrying out audits under the name BSR and Co.
because it was not allowed for the foreign auditing firms to Operate in India. In India at present
KPMG is a leading provider of risk, financial, and company consulting services, as well as tax
and legal services, internal audit, and corporate governance. The company believes in a certain
set of values that defines their orientation towards their different stakeholders. These values are.

Excellence: They aim for excellence i.e., to never stop learning and improving.

Mahindra
Mahindra and Mahindra Limited (M&M) is a multinational car manufacturing company based in
Mumbai, India. It is one of India’s largest automobile manufacturers by production and the
world’s largest tractor producer. It is an affiliate of the Mahindra Group, a conglomerate
headquartered in India. It is ranked 17th in ‘100 Most Sustainably Managed Companies in the
World’ the highest ranking any Indian company has received in this list. They deal in various
automobile categories such as commercial vehicles, passenger cars and two wheelers. It started
in 1945 in Ludhiana as a steel trading company and was named Mahindra and Muhammed on the
name of its founding fathers. Later in 1948 after the independence of India it was renamed as
Mahindra and Mahindra and decided to manufacture larger MUV’s initially they were known as
Jeep manufacturers in India, later they moved on to LCV’s and then tractors. Mahindra now is a
leading manufacturer of tractors in India. With its flagship Mahindra XUV500, Mahindra &
Mahindra is a major player in the Indian car industry’s utility vehicle manufacturing and
branding sectors, and it utilizes India’s increasing global market position in both the automotive
and farming industries to expand its products in other countries. It is not limited to this but has
also worked in military and defense, farm equipment as well as energy sector in India.
The brand is driven by one purpose- “To Rise”. They aim to create a positive value for their
customers, stakeholders, partners and world at large. The brand is driven by three core purposes

Methodology
We, the group members, contacted managers at various levels of the two organizations listed
above, KPMG and Mahindra, to gain a better understanding of practitioners’ perspectives on
organizational strategy, architecture, and culture, as well as their mutual fit and implications for
organizational success and effectiveness. As part of our primary research, we conducted
telephonic interviews with the managers. The details of the interviewee are as follows:

We also performed secondary research on both the organizations to get more clarity on their
structure, culture and way of functioning. It entailed gathering information from the internet,
mainly the company’s brochures and leaflets, which aided in understanding the company’s past
and providing key insights into its growth. Secondary analysis was also used to examine the
company’s actual success and how it compares to its industry rivals.
