The Articles of Confederation do not properly fulfill the rights promised to the thirteen states in
the United States of America. Gaining freedom through the Revolutionary War was a task that required
much effort and these articles do not adequately govern this country. Though Congress has great
intentions for this country, there should be some changes in this plan for the government.
One of the flaws from these articles includes is the fact that each state only has one vote no
matter what size it is. This could be very troublesome when in the process of voting. For example,
Virginia has a much greater amount of citizens in their state than any other; almost ten times more than
Delaware has. Even though the population of Virginia is large enough to fit ten smaller states inside of it,
they will only get one vote which is not fair. Along with the issue of only having one vote per state, when
passing a law you need nine of the thirteen states to vote to approve legislation. This makes it difficult to
pass any law because it only takes five states to prevent a law from being passed no matter the size of
the state.
Giving most of the power to the individual states in this country cannot be a good thing because
without some form of leadership, disorganization will occur among the states. The states do not have to
follow national laws because they don’t have any fear of punishments. The lack of national jurisdiction
could cause mayhem. If an individual citizen has an issue with the national government for some reason,
they will remain unheard because there is no one there to necessarily listen. Leadership should be
prioritized in this country especially when foreign affairs and possible threats are approaching. Each
state has their own army in case of war declaration, but individual armies are not sufficient enough to
defend the country from either an internal or external threat. An entire army as a whole would work
quicker and more efficiently if the country were to be put in a situation as such.
The states can trade freely without anyone controlling how they do so. This is a problem
because some states can allow their ports to be available to other states, while some states may not
want to have their ports open to others. It is important that this country has some type of entity
controlling the trade between states so that they will be able to work together in unification. In addition
