Summary
Dr. Siang-Yang Tan describes and explains the use of prayer and scripture during
cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT). He explains that there is empirical evidence of CBT for
treatment of a variety of disorders. The article discusses how behavior therapy is divided into
three major waves: traditional behavior, CBT, and commitment therapy. Dr. Tan, then explains
how to incorporate prayer, scripture, and a Christian approach, that he has developed, into CBT.
Dr. Tan explains that there are eight key features of the Christian approach to CBT.
These key features include: agape love, past issues, faith, thought and behavior problems, the
Holy Spirit’s guidance, community resources, use Christ like techniques, and use research. Tan
also discusses the use of implicit and explicit integration in therapeutic situations. “Implicit
