One of the major parts of communication is good listening. In this video they not only describe the best
methods for giving someone the attention they deserve, but they also highlight one of the major parts
of good communication which is listening. Also they give good tips on how to sharpen concentration.
Critical Listening
When it comes to critical listening one of the main strategies is to focus on both verbal and nonverbal
messages (pg.88). In the video they discuss the importance of nonverbal communication and how it
impacts communication. Nonverbal communication can complement spoken word, reveal truth and
convey information efficiently. For example, when having a conversation with a coworker giving them
eye contact and nodding your head gives them the idea you are attentively listening.
Listening Barriers
Listening barriers are things that get in the way of listening process whether it be physical or mental (pg.
81). The main barriers that were discussed in the video were lack of focus, distractions, biases and
prejudices and premature judgment. Distractions can either be mental or physical. An example of a
mental distraction would be if you just received bad new from a doctor, it might be difficult to listen to
someone. While an example of a physical distraction could be a hearing impairment or even a noisy
environment.
Active Listening
Active listening is one of the most important communication skills you can learn (pg. 88). One of the
techniques the video explained for active listening is to assume the best. When you are talking
communicating with someone you should not judge them based on age, race or any other stereotype.
Another technique they highlighted was “avoid the soapbox”, which means when you hear something
that you do not agree with that you should continue to listen and then when they are done formulate
your response.
